After the organizing committee of the Viña del Mar Festival ratified the presentation of Peso Pluma in the contest, sociologist Alberto Mayol issued a statement criticizing the decision and the public entities involved. All this, in the midst of the controversy started on Monday by a column by the academic, where he accuses that the Mexican’s music would vindicate the culture of drug trafficking.
“In its statement, the organization (which did not have a spokesperson nor do the signatures of those present in the decision refer) qualifies the efforts made by those of us who have pointed out the seriousness of the invitation as ‘censorship’ and ‘discrimination.’ “The use of the two concepts and the statement in its entirety not only qualifies those of us who have pointed out the criticism as censors and discriminators, but (not enough of that) they have chosen to praise the figure of Featherweight,” he noted.
The Usach academic carried the responsibility to different public entities and bodies, but particularly to the mayor’s office led by Macarena Ripamonti (RD). Mayol, who left the Frente Amplio in 2019, criticized that it is a “political authority related to the government”, and from “the same party that registered me a little more than six years ago as a presidential candidate”, which has not spoken out so far. regarding the situation.
“This dilemma has been talked regarding throughout Latin America and the United States, but the mayor remains strictly silent and the board of Chilean National Television (TVN) washed its hands of it by making an evasive statement,” he launched.
According to the sociologist, his appeal to public entities has two arguments: they must – he said – “always be concerned with safeguarding their mandate (the common good)” and, second, because “this government (for which I voted and whose political project I was his first presidential candidate) has emphasized that in public-private alliances the presence of state entities gives a different value and vision to the projects.”
“For example, the executives of a private channel must (it is an obligation) safeguard the economic rights of investors. Thus, suspending an artist who sells many tickets or whose departure may lead to losses of various kinds, should be rejected by his executives, except for more complex agreements,” he suggested.
However, he added, “it is obvious (especially from the perspective of the current national government and Viña del Mar) that public companies (such as TVN) and municipalities (local governments) should not think the same as a company.”
On the other hand, Mayol attacked his former coalition: “I remember that the Frente Amplio was always critical of the 30 years (1990 to 2020), a criticism that was complex because they were the best economic years in the history of Chile (.. .). The argument from the student movement first and the Frente Amplio later was clear: fundamental dimensions were postponed, they went blind to everything that is not success.”
“Today they are the ones who say: Featherweight is successful, that’s enough,” he said.
In addition, he said that the mayor of Viña del Mar “disregarded” the Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá, who pointed out that the government is concerned regarding following songs that promote “narcoculture.”
“They have hidden from the discussion and have sent a paper regarding which no one comes forward. That’s called cowardice, the food of drug trafficking. At the same time they have activated their most frequent and pathetic resource: the bully classmates of the course go ahead attacking those of us who have raised these arguments without taking into account the substance. “There are the defenders of the quality of politics,” he added.
At the end of the writing, the former Broad Front warned that “Peso Pluma has won a place in our main public festival, drug trafficking has defeated us with the resources it has: violence and money. And he has beaten us with the help of the State, with its resources and its authorities, promoting drug trafficking with public resources.”
