Enlightenment or mudslinging
The two new investigative committees had their constituent meetings this week. The “COFAG” committee requested by the SPÖ and FPÖ and the “Red-Blue Abuse of Power” committee set up by the ÖVP. The signs speak more for an upcoming mudslinging and less for parliamentary enlightenment. The surveys are taking place during the current EU and the beginning of the National Council election campaign and there is not much time left for committee work anyway – only nine meetings are planned for each. The law states that the committee must be terminated three months before the National Council election, i.e. in July. Marcus Blecha reports.
The guest in the studio is Christian Hafenecker, FPÖ parliamentary group leader in both U-committees.
In focus
A new National Council must be elected in Austria in nine months at the latest. The legislative period is coming to an end. Many of the original government projects have been implemented, but there is still a lot left open. And some things will probably remain open, because the two government parties are now more focused on election campaigns than on working on their coalition agreement. Claus Bruckmann reports.
Environment Prize for the House
During the renovation and general renovation, Parliament took many steps towards sustainability and these have now been praised. The Parliament has been awarded EMAS certification. EMAS is one of the strictest and most ambitious environmental management systems in the European Union. It’s regarding continuously improving environmental performance. So far, only the European Parliament has taken this step. The Haus am Ring is the first national parliament to play a pioneering role here. Claus Bruckmann looked at what Parliament had to do for this.
