The creator of Garry’s Mod responded to the news that Valve banned fan games: a port of Team Fortress 2 on the Source 2 engine and a demake of Portal for the Nintendo 64 console. As it turned out, the author of one of the most popular sandboxes was not at all surprised by this turn of events.

Garry Newman admittedthat closing fan projects is not typical for Valve, but Team Fortress: Source 2 and Portal 64 used the company’s intellectual property in its entirety. Harry noted that it is unlikely that the “old Valve” would have given the green light to porting the original Half-Life to another engine and publishing the port in the public domain.

Now Newman’s main development is a sandbox S&boxcreated on the basis of the Source 2 engine. It was it that was used to create Team Fortress: Source 2. Harry stated that this is a separate product, not a modification, so the developers do not have the rights to use Valve content.

In addition, the next S&box update will make major changes to the systems that would “break everything” in a fan port. Harry said Valve’s ban “frees up” enthusiasts from having to make code changes to be compatible with the new version of S&box.
