The huskies howl on the Postalm at the weekend

The Postalm ski area between Strobl and Abtenau, which was badly hit last year, has recovered well this year. There’s an exciting event going on there this weekend. The weather forecast is good.

The international sled dog race starts on the weekend (January 13th/14th) with over 80 participants. Internationally renowned starters are expected, including several world and European champions, who will compete in various disciplines with their impressive four-legged friends.

The races start daily from 10 a.m. to around 3 p.m. The audience experiences first-hand the enormous power and enthusiasm for running of the sled dogs. Participating dog breeds include Siberian Huskies, Alaskan Malamutes, Samoyeds, Greenland Dogs and Hounds.

A wide range of categories are offered, which are divided according to dog breed and number of dogs: from skijoering with a single dog to fascinating sledding categories with teams of up to twelve dogs.

The weather forecast for the weekend promises some sunshine, but no precipitation is expected.

The Lienbach trail and the connecting trail are closed during the event. Uphill tobogganing or moon biking will not be offered this weekend for safety reasons due to the expected influx of visitors.

Postalm is well on its way

The past Christmas holidays have meanwhile shown a pleasing picture of the lively influx of visitors, which reflects the times before the pandemic at the Postalm. There is no longer any sign of the challenges that the winter sports area had to contend with in the previous season.

“Around 14,000 skiers took advantage of the Christmas holidays to come to the Postalm,” says Linus Pilar, managing director of the Postalm Winter Park. On some days, more than 2,000 guests – including cross-country skiers, hikers, tobogganers and ski tourers – were drawn to the Postalm. According to Pilar, this confirms the need to strengthen small ski areas, to maintain and sustainably expand the regional winter sports offering.

Uphill tobogganing and moon biking

One measure that the Postalm operators are relying on is expanding the offering. This allows guests to try out new winter attractions, such as moon biking. Particular attention is paid to the balance between the fun factor and the protection of nature as well as maintaining a quiet and authentic winter environment. Therefore, the operation of the electric moon bikes is only offered under supervision.

From the age of fifteen, nature and adventure lovers can enjoy guided tours and exciting parkour with their quiet companions. Instead of large groups, the focus here is on individuality: guides travel with a maximum of two people – safety and enjoyment of nature come first.

Another new attraction on the Postalm is tobogganing uphill. The Tellerlift/Edtlift has been pulling all toboggan fans taller than 1.20 meters up the slopes since the end of December. After the great success of the last few weeks, uphill tobogganing is also offered on weekends in February from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
