The number of companies that cannot keep their heads above water is increasing rapidly. Last year, 3,271 companies went bankrupt: that is 50 percent more than a year earlier. There are many bankruptcies in the catering and trade sectors, among others.
This is evident from figures from statistics agency CBS. The increase can be seen across the country and in virtually every industry. The number of catering establishments that went bankrupt doubled. There was also a significant increase in industry, construction and transport, among others.
Particularly in December, many entrepreneurs had to close their business: with a total of 390 bankruptcies. It was the highest peak since May 2020, when the corona pandemic had just broken out.
After that peak, the number of companies that went bankrupt dropped quite quickly over the course of 2020. This was mainly due to the government’s extensive support package. The business community has thus received billions in support, including in paying wages and other fixed costs. They also received a deferment in paying taxes.
That support was phased out some time ago. This year it was added that entrepreneurs still have to pay their overdue taxes. This probably contributes to the growth in the number of bankruptcies.
Despite the significant increase, the number of bankruptcies is still lower than in 2019, the last year before the pandemic. Then 3,792 companies went bankrupt. In previous years there were even more, with a peak of 9,431 bankruptcies in 2013.
