The trial of Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myeong’s ‘Daejang-dong, Wirye, Seongnam FC, and Baekhyeon-dong incidents’, which was paused due to a knife attack, will resume from the 23rd. The court decided to proceed with the witness examination of Mr. Yoo Dong-gyu (former head of the Seongnam Provincial Office) regardless of whether or not Representative Lee is present.

The Seoul Central District Court’s Criminal Agreement Division 33 (Presiding Judge Kim Dong-hyun) held a trial preparation day for this case on the 12th and discussed the future trial schedule. The trial on this day was the first since CEO Lee, who had been hospitalized for an attack with a weapon, was discharged from the hospital on the 10th. Because it was not a formal trial, Representative Lee did not attend court.
The trial in this case was halted for nearly a month due to the car accident of Mr. Yoo, who was a key witness, last month and the recent attack on CEO Lee.
The court said, “When I contacted Yoo Dong-gyu, he said he might appear because he did not have surgery,” and added, “We are planning to hold the next date on January 23rd as witnesses can be summoned right away.” The court also mentioned the trial renewal process due to changes in the court, such as the change of assigned judges due to regular personnel changes in mid-February. The trial renewal process is to restart the previous process to facilitate the understanding of the successor judge when the court changes.
The court decided to speed up the trial by completing the trial renewal process, which usually takes 2 to 3 months, within one month. The court said, “I think it is a waste of time (playing all the recordings in court) when only the judge assigned is changed,” and added, “I think it will end quickly if we notify the content.” At the same time, he said, “Since the defendant will also have to attend the renewal process, I would like to conduct the process 2 to 3 times in a period of regarding a month and give both the prosecution and the defendant an opportunity to present important parts.”
Representative Lee said it would be difficult to attend trial for the time being. Representative Lee’s lawyer said, “They say they will return to work quickly and make sure the trial goes through without a hitch, but looking at the medical staff’s opinion and what he looked like when he was discharged, I think it will be difficult for the time being.” He added, “It’s a situation where even talking is quite difficult.”
In response to this, the court decided to hold a trial, saying, “As I have mentioned in the past, there will be no end to the trial if it proceeds according to Representative Lee’s schedule.” At the same time, it was decided to hold a trial on the 23rd and proceed with the previously scheduled witness examination of Mr. Yoo. Accordingly, Representative Lee’s cross-examination of Mr. Yoo will be held three times from the 23rd to the 26th and 30th.
The court also decided to proceed with trial preparation procedures on the 6th and 16th of next month, and to hold a formal trial from the 20th of next month, following the regular appointment of judges.
Representative Lee was stabbed in the left side of his neck by a weapon wielded by Mr. Kim (67) while visiting Gadeok Island in Busan on the morning of the 2nd. After receiving emergency treatment at Pusan National University Hospital, he was transported by helicopter, underwent surgery and hospitalization at Seoul National University Hospital, and was discharged on the 10th. He is currently receiving home treatment.
Representative Lee is also scheduled to be tried on charges of violating the Public Official Election Act related to the ‘Baekhyeon-dong suspicions and false remarks by the late Kim Moon-ki’ and on charges of ‘instructing perjury impersonating a prosecutor’ on the 19th and 22nd, respectively. As Representative Lee’s side is complaining of difficulties in attending his trial, the progress of the remaining trials is expected to be disrupted.
