Balachandra Menon was born on January 11, 1954. School life in Paravur and Kottarakkara. College life started at Fatima Mata College, Kollam. After that, he completed his undergraduate studies at University College, Thiruvananthapuram and post-graduation in Journalism from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s Institute of Journalism. He started acting and directing through school and college plays.
He became a film reporter when his love for cinema became intense. In 1978, he directed his first film “Uthara Ratri”. In 1997, he won the National Award for Best Actor with his own film Samantamanal. It is the first time that a character written and directed by a person has won that award. The country honored this lone figure in Malayalam cinema by awarding him the Padma Shri.
