Since mass production of this durable material began, humanity has produced an estimated ten billion tons of plastic. The majority of it ends up in landfills and the environment at some point. Crushed into tiny particles, plastic can now be found in every corner of the earth: there are said to be over 70 million tons of microplastics in the oceans alone.
