Tragic Bicycle Accident on Regional Avenue in Medellín: Investigation and Updates

A man who was riding a bicycle along Regional Avenue died this Thursday morning following being hit by a truck from the Medellín Mobility Secretariat, in events that are the subject of investigation by the authorities.

According to the first reports, the accident occurred on a section of that important road near Ciudad del Río, on Carrera 49 on Calle 18, in the El Poblado neighborhood, southwest of Medellín.

To inspect the scene, agents of the Judicial Police of the Ministry of Mobility were forced to temporarily close the four lanes of the eastern highway of the highway, generating heavy traffic congestion.

According to the authorities, a man and a woman, friends of each other, were traveling on both bicycles along this national corridor and, apparently, they had become entangled with each other, causing the man, identified as César Iván Ramírez Martínez, to fall. , 48 years old.

In the middle of the incident, the man fell to the ground and was hit by the truck that was traveling next to him, losing his life at the scene. Meanwhile, the woman was injured and was taken to a care center, with some injuries that did not endanger her life and with a high degree of alteration due to what happened. This woman’s partner arrived at the scene.

Although around 9:00 a.m. this Thursday, traffic authorities were forced to partially restrict circulation on Regional Avenue, around 10:00 a.m. that corridor was once once more enabled normally.

This was one of the two cases with deaths that were recorded in this corridor in the morning, since around 5:30 am the death of a pedestrian occurred, who was run over by a truck that was traveling along this road, 500 meters away. north of where the subsequent accident occurred, on the same roadway.

The victim of this accident was identified as Michael Guevara, 22, and authorities are advancing the investigation into the reasons why this person was crossing the street.

With these two deaths there are now 12 victims of traffic accidents recorded on the roads of Medellín this year, according to the Medellín Mobility Secretariat. Of the victims, five were pedestrians and he is the first cyclist this year.

Regarding Regional Avenue, these two deaths are the first two cases that occur in 2024, in a corridor in which 33 people died in 2023.
