Navy Wrestling Team Competing in 43rd Annual Virginia Duals

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The 16th-ranked Navy wrestling team (6-0) resumes its dual slate this weekend to compete in the 43rd annual Virginia Duals at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Va. The Mids will face No. 11 South Dakota State (4-2) on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and No. 19 Oklahoma (4-2) on Saturday at noon.

Navy Team Notes

• Navy won its sixth dual of the season on Dec. 21 when it defeated American, 38-0
• The win marked the first time the Mids shut out an EIWA opponent since 1989 when they beat Franklin & Marshall, 37-0
• Navy has also earned wins over then No. 23 Illinois (23-18), then No. 16 Pitt (21-12), Morgan State (39-0), VMI (40-6) and Ohio (27-12)
• The Mids have held two teams scoreless this season. Navy hadn’t posted multiple shutouts in a single season since 2020-21 when it defeated Cleveland State (37-0) and George Mason (44-0)
• The Mids have won their last eight duals dating back to last season, which is their longest winning streak since they won 10-consecutive duals between the 2004-05 and 2005-06 campaigns
• Navy has scored at least 20 points in all six duals this season and has outscored its opponents, 188-48
• The Mids have won 46 of the 60 bouts in duals this season and have earned bonus points in 22 of their wins (47.8)

• Brendan Ferretti (133) and Josh Koderhandt (141) are both 5-0 in duals and are tied as the team leader in dual wins this season
• Koderhandt has won his last 10 dual matches dating back to last season and leads the team with 21 dual victories in his career
• Ferretti has claimed sixth-straight wins in duals dating back to last season. The sophomore is 12-3 (80.0) in duals in his career
• Griess leads Navy in total wins this season with 17. Additionally, he owns the third-most victories amongst ranked heavyweights in the nation
• Griess surpassed Koderhandt as the team leader in career victories (68) with his four wins at the Franklin & Marshall Open
• Griess and Wask have only lost to ranked opponents this season
• Cerniglia has won 18 of his 22 dual matches and owns the best winning percentage in duals on the team (81.8)
• The senior won two of his six matches at the Franklin & Marshall Open by technical fall to give him a career-high four wins by tech fall this season
• Ferere continued his excellent sophomore campaign with a 4-1 record at the Franklin & Marshall open. The Highpoint, N.C., native is second on the team in wins (16) and leads the Mids in victories by fall (6) and major decision (6)
• David Key (184) needs two wins in Hampton to set a new career high in dual victories in a season. The senior has totaled five dual wins in each of his previous three seasons
• Key won all three of his matches at the Virginia Duals a year ago, two of which were once morest ranked wrestlers
• Hayden Benter (125) and Daniel Williams (197) are the only mids in the projected lineup that haven’t competed in a dual
• Williams also had a solid performance at the Franklin & Marshall Open. The freshman won three of his five matches and was one of only five Navy wrestlers to post at least three victories

• South Dakota State scored big in its three wins at the Dakota Showcase once morest Dakota Wesleyan (46-4), Northern State (33-6) and Augustana (37-9)
• The Jackrabbits dropped their next two duals to Big 10 foes Minnesota (19-13) and Nebraska (21-17)
• South Dakota State returned to the win column with a big upset in its first meeting once morest then No. 6 Michigan by a score of 22-17. The Jackrabbits earned bonus points in four of their five wins, including a victory by technical fall (17-1, 3:18) by Tanner Sloan (197) to clinch the dual

• After a 30-12 defeat once morest then No. 3 Missouri, Oklahoma rallied to defeat West Virginia, 21-19. The Sooners trailed, 19-13, with two bouts remaining, but a win by technical fall (18-3, 7:00) from Stephen Buchanan (197) and a win by decision (9-7) from Josh Heindselman (285) flipped the scoreboard

• Established in 1909, the Navy wrestling program is in its 116th season as a varsity sport. Head coach John Schutz directed the Mids to a 24-9 victory over Penn on March 13, 1909 in their inaugural dual
• Having amassed a 927-324-26 overall record, Navy captured the program’s 900th win behind a 21-12 win victory Maryland on Dec. 6, 2019
• With 74 NCAA Championship appearances in tow, there are just eight programs who have competed in more – Oklahoma State (91), Oklahoma (83), Iowa State (82), Michigan (81), Michigan State (79), Penn State (79), Lehigh (77) and Illinois (76). Like Navy, both Iowa and Minnesota have made 74 appearances
• The Mids, meanwhile, have the 25th-longest active NCAA Championship appearance streak, having competed in each of the last 25 tournaments. Oklahoma leads the country with 73-straight appearances

Navy heads back on the road next weekend for a pair of EIWA duals. The Mids will take on their longest rival, Lehigh, next Saturday at 2 p.m. in Bethlehem, Pa. Navy will then travel to Vestal, N.Y., to battle Binghamton on Sunday at 2 p.m.
