This extremely rare event fortunately ended well. This Tuesday, January 9, a 14-year-old girl attending the François-Truffaut college in Saint-Martin-de-Seignanx, in the Landes, suffered a cardiac arrest. Fortunately, two mothers and the school nurse saved the girl’s town.

“I saw the girl lying on the ground. A mother asked me if I might do something. I entrusted my daughter to him and I threw myself on my knees,” mentioned Marion Lissayou, a 32-year-old nurse in Sud Ouest (source 1). Very quickly, she is joined by Élodie, a caregiver and mother, and by the college nurse. “If several people had not mobilized to save her, I mightn’t have done anything alone », confessed Marion Lissayou. The three women practice first aid and perform a heart massage on the schoolgirl. But it’s not enough, the young girl doesn’t wake up. Marion Lissayou then asks that someone go get a defibrillator. Women follow the recommendations of the device placed on the schoolgirl’s chest. “It was the machine that did the job. We only followed the instructions she gave,” explained Marion Lissayou humbly.

They continue the cardiac massage until the firefighters arrive, who then take care of her. The 14-year-old girl was taken to the emergency room. The day following her cardiac arrest, the schoolgirl was successfully operated. She remains under surveillance at the Bordeaux hospital center.

The importance of first aid actions

Fortunately for the young girl, first aid procedures were carried out quickly, which considerably improves the chances of survival. “Know where the defibrillators are located and know the first aid procedures, when a person’s life is at stake in just a few seconds, it can make all the difference », recognized Marion Lissayou.

During a cardiac arrest, 1 minute saved means 10% more chance of survival. You should also know that following 5 minutes without the heart beating, if nothing is done, brain damage is irreversible. According to the French Federation of Cardiology, “the survival rate for cardiac arrest in France is 7% if no action is performed. It rises to 35% if actions are done correctly” (source 2). If you want train yourself in first aid procedures, training is organized by the Red Cross. Every year, around 40,000 people die suddenly from cardiac arrest.
