LANSING — Police are searching for a suspect who fled from an area near downtown Lansing Wednesday evening following an incident in which an officer was injured.
When Duling and a passenger would not get out of the car, Duling is accused of backing up, then driving toward the officer, who was struck by the vehicle, Sosebee said at an 11:30 p.m. press conference. The officer fired on the vehicle, which fled the area.
Lansing Police Chief Ellery Sosebee said a Lansing police officer approached a 2014 white Chevrolet Cruze being driven by Zachary Duling while the car was stopped near a home in the 300 block of West Saginaw Street.
Sosebee said the officer is being treated at a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The officer has been placed on administrative leave while Michigan State Police investigate the incident, which is standard when an LPD officer is involved in an incident where shots are fired.
He added that Duling, described as a 30-year-old white male, is wanted out of Jackson County, where he had escaped from officers there in recent days.
Police urged the public not to approach Duling or the vehicle and to call 911 if they encounter Duling or see the car.
The license plate on the vehicle is EBW 5891.
Police said it’s not clear whether anyone in the sedan was injured, and that they do not know the identity of the passenger. Police across the region are involved in the search, police said.
Lansing police shortly following 8 p.m. Wednesday said at least one officer was involved in a shooting and asked the community to avoid the area of the incident just northwest of the city’s downtown.
“There has been an officer involved shooting in the 300 block of W Saginaw Street in Lansing,” the department posted on social media.
Michigan State Police and Lansing police were on the scene.
West Saginaw was blocked off between Walnut and Seymour streets.
The 300 block of West Saginaw is one block west of Capitol Avenue between Walnut and Seymour streets.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
