Herbert Kickl’s Views on Russia-Ukraine War, Israel-Hamas Conflict, and More: A Year-End Review

2024-01-10 22:21:22

In an interview with ZIB2 this evening, FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl commented on Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine, the Israel-Hamas war, inflation and the issue of asylum. Kickl once once more criticized the government for not intervening in the fight once morest inflation. The rent cap, for example, comes too late.

The strategy of getting people through the crisis with vouchers and bonuses was wrong. The FPÖ would rely on a reduction in VAT, even if this is not accurate. Kickl: “Sometimes it’s regarding helping quickly, in an uncomplicated and unbureaucratic way.”

Kickl explained the higher salaries in politics, for example among the politicians in the ÖVP-FPÖ government in Lower Austria, by saying that the FPÖ was not able to get the ÖVP to forego a salary increase out of solidarity. It wasn’t worth breaking the coalition, “because we make politics for our own people in the countries.” 2024 will be the “year of change”.

“National Council not a stage for warring parties”

The FPÖ condemns the Hamas attacks and the Russian attack on Ukraine, but advocates neutrality. That’s why he left parliament when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj spoke there: “The National Council is not a stage for warring parties.” If so, then the second side would also have to be invited and heard. Kickl: “I am just as critical of Russia as I am of Ukraine. I believe that this will only help us if we develop an understanding for both sides.”

Kickl “does not take seriously” criticism from the former head of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and Combating Terrorism (BVT), Peter Gridling, that he was spreading Russian propaganda. Rather, he countered the accusation with criticism of Gridling and his administration.

In the case of the Israel-Hamas war, it cannot be the case that all rules are suspended for Israel and excessive self-defense measures are taken. In any case, Kickl would have “preferred” Austria to abstain from the vote in the UN Security Council on the Israel-Hamas war rather than Austria rejecting it.
