Among our neighbors, we call this “ugly France”. Every year, a competition is organized there to show the atrocities resulting from land use planning. Throughout Europe, urban sprawl is spreading to cities and countryside and entire landscapes are being devastated, particularly on the outskirts of cities. However, there is now a remedy for this pandemic, developed in a Swiss laboratory: building culture.
In 2018, Alain Berset launched a Declaration to the European Ministers of Culture meeting in Davos: we manage to protect ancient heritage and produce beautiful architecture for museums, he said in substance, but all this is drowned in infrastructure, successions of shopping centers, industrial zones and residential neighborhoods that are not exactly happy. However, the built environment considerably influences well-being, social cohesion, the environment, and even the feeling of belonging to a place. Investing in a quality built environment should be a priority.
