Cape Verdean player Hélio Varela refused to join his country’s national team, which will participate in the African Cup of Nations, following being called up.
In a note released on social media, the Portimonense player, from Portugal, only said that it was a personal decision.
“It was a decision that anyone who knows me knows how difficult it was to make because they knew my love for the country and my pride in wearing the Cape Verde jersey, but still a decision taken individually and notified in good time, I can only say thank you for the call and ask God that we will be very happy together in the future.
I wish my colleagues and technical team a blessed participation and that they bring the trophy to our people and country”, wrote the winger who plays for Portimomense, in the Portuguese Primeira Liga.
It is recalled that the 21-year-old player also refuted accusations that he had abandoned the Tubarões Azuis training camp taking place in Tróia, Portugal. “It is completely false that it was already at an internship when the decision was made”, Hélio stressed.
