INTERNATIONAL – It all started with a photo of the Indian Prime Minister on the beach. On January 4, the latter posted on social networks several images of his visit to the tropical archipelago Lakshadweep. With his feet in the water and his gaze turned towards the horizon, Narendra Modi praised the “pristine beaches” Indian islands… And the Maldives didn’t like it at all, as you can see in our video above.
Some took this heavenly photoshoot as an attempt to keep Indian tourists away from the Maldives. Three Maldivian deputy ministers from the Ministry of Youth therefore attacked the Indian Prime Minister online, calling him “ clown ” and of ” terrorist “. If the deputy ministers were quickly suspended from their functions, this torrent of insults triggered a strong reaction in India.
Indian stars lead boycott
In 2023, Indian tourists made more than 209,000 trips to the Maldives, says CNN, but this diplomatic hiccup might well reduce the trend. Using the hashtag #BoycottMaldives, some Internet users posted screenshots online proving the cancellation of their next trip to the Maldives. Indian stars have also called for a boycott of the tropical country’s paradise beaches, even though tourism represents a third of the archipelago’s economy.
The vice-captain of the national cricket team, Hardik Pandya, for example, declared “extremely sad to see what is being said regarding India”, specifying that he would book his next vacation on an Indian beach. EaseMyTrip, an online travel booking platform representing nearly 10% of this market in India, has also decided to suspend all its flight reservations to the archipelago.

The Maldives’ main tourism organization strongly condemned the comments of the deputy ministers in a statement, calling for the preservation of “the close relationship between the two nations”. The president of the archipelago was elected in September by promising to expel a unit of Indian military forces which carries out air patrols there. India agreed in early December to withdraw this contingent from the Maldives.
