Marlene Svazek leads the FPÖ list in local elections in her home town of Großgmain

Salzburg’s deputy governor Marlene Svazek (FPÖ) will run in the municipal elections on March 10th in her hometown. Svazek announced this on Wednesday. However, she will not be available as mayor. She supports the ÖVP candidate Martin Panzer.

“I will lead the liberal list in Großgmain and, if desired by the voters, I will continue to be available as deputy mayor in my home community,” said Deputy State Governor Marlene Svazek, explaining her decision to run for the municipal council election in Großgmain.

The anchoring and responsibility towards her home led Svazek to this decision despite the high workload. “I wouldn’t have the heart to live in Großgmain but not be involved in the development. I also feel responsible for my home,” says Svazek.

Voters will decide on March 10th whether this commitment is still desired. The aim, however, is to defend the deputy mayor and prevent majorities without the Freedom Party in the municipal council.

No Mayor Svazek

Svazek would not be available as mayor. “Grossgmain deserves a mayor who, given the many challenges, can commit to this office consciously and, above all, with adequate time. Dancing at two weddings with 200 percent each is simply not possible in terms of time and health,” said Svazek.

As mayor, she will therefore support the already announced candidate Martin Panzer. “This is not support for an ÖVP candidate, but for the person Martin Panzer, whom I value very much and with whom future-oriented cooperation for the community is also possible. Together we would make a lot of progress,” said Svazek, explaining the decision was supported in the group and approved unanimously.

Difficult candidate search

The search for their own mayoral candidate has proven very difficult – and ultimately futile – for the Freedom Party in Großgmain. When asked by SN, Svazek said: “We didn’t just want to nominate a counting candidate, but if we do that, then we also claim to nominate the mayor. But that has to be possible for this person both professionally and privately.”

The decision not to nominate a candidate for mayor had already been made in December, said Svazek: “If the election turns out to be vice mayor, then I’ll be happy to do that. If not, I’m also prepared to continue to be involved as a community representative.”

There has now been a constructive conversation with Martin Panzer in which she personally declared her support. “For human and professional reasons, I might not have imagined such a collaboration with long-time party leader Ingrid Scheucher-Neumüller, who recently left the ÖVP. Now the situation is different,” said Svazek, who hopes that the former ÖVP chairwoman’s mudslinging at the expense of the municipality of Großgmain is kept within limits.
