In the middle of the southern seas, on the ice and at the foot of icebergs threatened by global warming, the crew of the Simon Bolivar, including a number of scientists, must carry out 19 research projects, mainly on climate change, according to the organizers of the shipping.

“The phenomena generated within the continent (Antarctica) have a global impact (…) particularly in terms of climate change,” she added, a few days following the end of the hottest year in the history of the planet.

According to a press release published Tuesday by the navy, the expedition also aims to obtain the integration of Colombia as a “consultative member of the Antarctic Treaty”, which has regulated research activities in this area since 1961 and intends to preserve the continent of international rivalries.

The ship began its journey to the Colombian Caribbean in mid-December, from the city of Cartagena, where the first preparations were made. After stopping at Buenaventura, the main Colombian port on the Pacific coast, he arrived twelve days later in the port city of Valparaiso, Chile.

Since its departure, ARC Simon Bolivar has traveled more than 5,000 nautical miles, or approximately 9,000 kilometers, the navy said.
