Scriptwriter Medhat El Adl, President of the Egyptian Authors, Composers and Publishers Association, spoke regarding the recent crisis between the association and producer Mohsen Gaber over the ownership of Ms. Umm Kulthum’s heritage.
He said during a television interview with the program “The Last Word” with the media personality Lamis Al-Hadidi, broadcast on the “ON E” screen on Tuesday evening, that the association owns 90% of the intellectual property rights of authors and composers, pointing out that 70% of Ms. Umm Kulthum’s songs are owned by the Cairo Voice Company. -One of the members of the association – as one of the publishers.
He explained that producer Mohsen Jaber only owns 30% – not 100% – as he points out, denying the validity of his statements regarding the authors and composers handing over their songs to Mrs. Umm Kulthum, pointing out that the contract signed between his company and Sawt Al-Qahira stipulates that the latter owns 98 songs, while Jaber owns only 30% of the distribution rights.
He noted that Voice of Cairo is a public sector company owned by the state, pointing out that the association owns a contract waiving Umm Kulthum’s distribution rights to Voice of Cairo, signed during the era of the United Arab Republic.
He denied once more that he received 100% following the heirs abdicated, saying: “He got 100% out of a total of 30%, while Sawt Cairo got 70%.”
He pointed out the suffering of members of the association who are heirs of “artists who were full of hearing and sight” due to the deterioration of their living conditions beyond the imagination of the public, adding: “We in the association are responsible for the rights of these people.”
