ISLAMABAD- The Supreme Court of Pakistan lifted the life ban imposed on the people’s representatives involved in the case from contesting the elections. With this, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan and the leader of Pakistan Muslim League (PML-Nawaz) Nawaz Sharif opened the way to contest the elections.

For any crime
The Supreme Court pointed out that making the ban life-long was illogical and clarified that even if convicted, the disqualification would be only for five years.
The verdict was delivered by a seven-member bench headed by Chief Justice Qazi Fayez Isa.

Elections are going to be held in Pakistan on February 8. Meanwhile, the important judgment of the Supreme Court was issued.

The court found Sharif guilty in 2017. The life ban applicable from that date will change with the new judgment. The Islamabad High Court acquitted Sharif who was convicted in a corruption case last December.

Nawaz Sharif returned to Pakistan following four years of exile in October last year. Nawaz Sharif, who went abroad for treatment in 2019 with the permission of the Lahore High Court, never returned home.
