The National Assembly (Parliament) of South Korea approved this Tuesday prohibit the breeding, slaughter, distribution and sale of dog meat for human consumption. The news was received as a historic triumph by animal rights defenders, following decades of struggle in the Asian country.
The law, proposed by the ruling and conservative People’s Power Party (PPP), agreed with the rest of the parties and promoted by the South Korean first lady, Kim Keon-hee, was approved by 208 votes in favor and 2 abstentions.
It will come into effect following a grace period of three years. Starting in 2027, violators will face penalties of up to two years in prison or fines equivalent to more than $22,000.
