The “Luxgen n7”, advancedly designed by Honghua and bearing the Luxgen brand, is Taiwan’s first domestically produced electric passenger car, which is of special significance to domestic consumers and industry development. More affordable electric vehicles will enter the market in the next three years, but this also reflects hidden concerns in Taiwan’s automotive supply chain.
Starting in January, n7 will start delivering cars one following another. It is expected to deliver the first batch of regarding 8,000 individual membership and 1,000 company bank orders within half a year, becoming the automaker with the second largest number of electric vehicle listings in Taiwan, closely following Tesla. following.
The era of affordable electric vehicles is coming
This car is not only Yulon Group’s new hope in the era of electric vehicles, but also a major milestone for the development of Taiwan’s electric vehicle market and industry. First of all, n7 has set a record-breaking price for electric vehicles. The attractive pricing strategy is not only to win orders, but also to accelerate the development of the domestic electric vehicle market.
Zhan Xingsheng, deputy general manager of Nanyang Industrial, analyzed that one of the main players in Taiwan’s auto market is the mid-sized SUV market where n7 is located. The domestic price is regarding 1 million to 1.2 million; while n7 offers entry-level models for members, the price is deliberately kept in the same range to compete with Compared with fuel vehicles of the same class, “when considering switching from gasoline to electricity, people have an additional choice that fits their budget.”
In addition to the n7, more domestic electric vehicles will appear in 2024. For example, China Motors, which is also part of the Yulon Group, its agent brand MG is preparing to assemble and sell the electric car MG4 in Taiwan; and Honghua’s advanced small SUV model Model B has completed the engineering design and is expected to see this car put on the market by the end of the year. Due to the smaller model of the Nazi brand, the price is expected to be lower than that of the n7.
Not only Taiwan, but also the global auto market is entering a new stage of affordable electric vehicles.
Battery costs are sliding down a slippery slope
The main reason is that the price of batteries, which account for regarding 40% of the manufacturing cost of electric vehicles, continues to fall thanks to technological advancement. Research organization Bloomberg New Energy Finance pointed out that due to the substantial increase in production capacity both upstream and downstream of the battery supply chain, supply growth is faster than demand, and global lithium battery prices fell by 14% in 2023, hitting a record low.
Battery costs continue to fall like a slide, allowing many car manufacturers to accelerate the development of more affordable electric vehicles that meet public demand.
Service providers connect in series to build charging network
When the n7 was launched, Yulon Group recruited seven major domestic electric vehicle charging service providers, such as Huacheng Evalue, ZTE iCharging and Ter Electric Power of the three groups, to launch a “charging roaming platform” simultaneously with the delivery of the n7. By connecting the charging systems of different operators through the platform, car owners can connect to various charging piles to charge and charge through one app, without having to download multiple apps.
“There are so, so many operators now, and a new one has been added recently. It’s hard to count on both hands and toes,” Huacheng Electric CEO Xu Yisheng said with a smile. There are currently more than 20 charging operators in Taiwan, and sooner or later there will be one. To integrate. In other words, the charging pile landscape will also undergo some reshuffling.
Honghua Advanced spokesman Wang Liwei said that except for high-end components such as batteries, which must be outsourced for the N7, almost all other components are supplied by Taiwanese manufacturers. The domestically produced rate of the entire vehicle exceeds 40%. “We also hope that Taiwan’s supply chain If we can grow with electric vehicles, as long as Taiwan can supply them, of course we will give priority to finding them in Taiwan.”
Parts factories worry regarding crowding out effect
Having said that, there are also industry players who have a high sense of crisis regarding the period when the supply chain is switching from oil to electricity and there is a shortage of supply.
A vice president of an auto parts factory is worried that converting existing traditional automobile production lines to produce electric vehicles will require a large investment. Taiwan’s domestic cooperation partners are mainly Japanese automakers. These Japanese automakers have been actively moving southward in recent years. For example, they have tariffs Advantages of Thailand. Due to the crowding-out effect, it is more difficult for Taiwan to obtain authorization for new parts for electric vehicles. Future domestically produced electric vehicles will most likely have components imported from overseas and will only be responsible for final assembly, causing the domestic vehicle parts market to continue to shrink.
