The UN International Court of Justice, in The Hague, scheduled the public hearing for the 11th and 12th of January; in an action brought by South Africa last December
The action filed by South Africa last Friday (29), alleges a series of “violations by Israel of its obligations in relation to the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide [por agir] once morest the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip,” the court said.
In the nomination request, the court also stated that the hearings will be dedicated to South Africa’s application for provisional measures in order to “protect once morest further, serious and irreparable harm the rights of the Palestinian people under the Genocide Convention”, in addition to guaranteeing that Israel fulfills its obligations under the Convention to not only not engage in genocide, but to prevent and punish it.
When the action was presented, the president of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, demonstrated his dissatisfaction with the South African position and called the genocide process brought once morest his country “cowardice”.
Washington also criticized the process. John Kirby, strategic communications coordinator for the US National Security Council, said the action is “counterproductive and unfounded.”
Since October 7th, when the escalation of the conflict between Israel and Hamas began, following an attack by the Palestinian movement that killed 1,200 Israelis, more than 22,000 Palestinians have died in the Gaza Strip.
