Communication, along with intelligence, are an example of the interest in dogs. For this reason, Stanley Coren – a psychology professor at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada – has dedicated most of his professional career to investigating the cognitive ability of canines.
Thus, the expert found that breeds such as border collie have the ability to learn up to 250 different words, as explained in an article published in the American Psychological Association. Something surprising for many caregivers who think that their furry friends do not understand more than their name and the commands: “food”, “no” and “go out”.
According to the level of processing that each breed has, the expert assures that “border collies are number one; Poodles come in second place, followed by German Shepherds. Fourth place on the list is occupied by golden retrievers; fifth, Doberman; sixth, shetland sheepdogs; and finally, the farmers.”
Likewise, although the number of words a dog can learn depends on its breed, all canines, according to Coren, are capable of associating 15 key commands with an action and they are the following:
- Good boy: related to good behavior.
- Down: to get off a sofa, bed or wherever you are standing.
- Outside: this is how you distinguish between the inside and outside of a space.
- Release it: so that it opens its mouth.
- Leave it: in this way you stop paying attention to a certain object or situation.
- Sit: An order to sit.
- Lie down: an order to lie down.
- Come: an order to approach the one who calls you.
- Go for it: with the aim of having it go for a thrown object, or simply a distant object.
- Bring It: Directly related to the previous command, this is a command for you to bring the object.
- Yes: a sign of approval for whatever you are doing.
- Still: a signal to stop moving.
- Walk: a command to continue on your way during a walk.
- Have fun: permission to play freely.
- Let’s eat: the indication that it is time to eat.
