The Mega Evolution mechanic may have disappeared from the mainline Pokémon games, but fans continue to debate over which Pokémon should receive Mega forms if it ever returns.
Mega Evolution was a mechanic introduced in Pokémon X & Y, which allowed certain Pokémon to transform into an even stronger form. The trade-off was that the Pokémon mightn’t use a held item, but it was still worth it, considering the stat increases and new Ability that Mega Evolution might provide.

The concept of Mega Evolution was popular with fans, although it was considered disruptive in the competitive fighting scene. Despite its popularity, it was removed from the main games in Pokémon Sword & Shield, where it was replaced by the Dynamax/Gigantamax mechanic.
Although Pokémon games released since Generation 6 have tried to introduce new battle mechanics (like Z-Moves and Terastallization), fans are still asking the Pokémon Company to bring back Mega Evolutions in future games.

“Libégon and Wailord are the two that immediately come to mind,” commented a 3rd generation fan, “Libégon was mistreated in ROSA, as we all know. Wailord is one of my favorites, I love huge creatures and Wailord being the Greatest of the Great would definitely be an incredibly impressive Mega.”
A user had a surprising request for a Pokémon with an existing Mega Evolution to receive a second form. “Gyarados should get a second. Keep it Water/Flying or pure Dragon but give it 2 or 4 small arms like a traditional oriental dragon.”

Mega Evolutions continue to live on in Pokémon Go, and there’s a chance that new forms might be introduced there one day, but until then, fans are probably stuck waiting for Gen 6 remakes to arrive. Return of Mega Evolutions, with hopefully some new faces among the Mega roster.
