Inter Milan general manager Giuseppe Marotta on Monday brushed aside the idea that his team, leading the Italian Championship, was favored by referees following a new controversy this weekend in Serie A over the use of video refereeing.
«I’ve been in football for over forty years, and every season, there are these discussions regarding decisions in favor or once morest this team or that.», declared the leader following a meeting of the Italian Football League. “Before, there was only the referee’s look and there was no VAR. Even with VAR, there are always controversies, it’s part of football“, he continued. “To take an image, today, Inter is a hare and a hare must know how to dodge the hunters’ rifle shots», underlined Marotta.
Sunday, on the 19th day of the Italian Championship, Inter struggled to beat Verona 2-1, a victory which allowed them to finish the first leg in the lead with two points ahead of Juventus Turin. For many observers, the winning goal, scored by Inter in added time, should have been invalidated due to a foul by a Milan player, Alessandro Bastoni, who pushed into the area one of his opponents, Ondrej Duda, just before the shot which led to the goal. Asked, the video refereeing however found nothing wrong with the action.
“Our team deserves to be in the lead”
«We must recognize the merits of Inter, our team deserves to be at the top of Serie A“, insisted its general director, recalling “we are first with 48 points, 15 wins, only one loss, we have the best attack, the best defense, the best goal difference».
«At the end of the season, it is the best team that will be crowned champion, we cannot and must not talk regarding favoritism“, he concluded.
