KGaA, has appointed the Presidential Committee of the Advisory Board of Borussia Dortmund Unternehmensführungs-GmbH under the chairmanship of President Dr. Reinhold Lunow has been informed that he will no longer be extending his managing director employment contract, which currently runs until the end of 2025, and will be resigning from the management in autumn 2025.”
Will Watzke take on another BVB position?
It is also planned that Watzke will hand over overall sporting responsibility by June 30, 2024. It is unclear whether the 64-year-old will take on another official position at BVB from 2026 and who will be Watzke’s successor. The trend is that
“It was always important to me that it would be a self-determined exit. It was a long time. I am very, very grateful to my club for giving me this opportunity. I consider it a great privilege. I will do my job with full enthusiasm and energy until the last day,” explained Watzke in Marbella. “I want to focus on strategy and transition in the final year. The Presidential Committee asked me to hold discussions, develop ideas and present a concept regarding overall responsibility. I agreed to that,” said Watzke during a media round in Marbella. The decision not to extend his contract was finally made over Christmas.
Watzke start at BVB in 2001
Watzke initially worked for the Black and Yellows as treasurer from 2001 until he was appointed managing director of Borussia Dortmund GmbH & Co. KGaA on February 15, 2005. Together with President Reinhard Rauball and Financial Director Thomas Treß, he saved the club from bankruptcy in 2006 through a far-reaching restructuring of liabilities amounting to around 120 million euros. In the following years, BVB developed into a top club in Europe.

“At some point the day will come when I will only be a fan of Borussia Dortmund. I am looking forward. I used to look forward to Saturday from Wednesday. I will then be able to do that once more without the side effects. If we win, I’ll be happy. And if we lose, then I just blame those responsible,” explained Watzke.
