2024 Golden Globes Winners: Oppenheimer, Barbie, and Anatomy of a Fall Take the Spotlight

Christopher Nolan’s biopic on the father of the atomic bomb was a huge hit: best drama film, best director, best actor in a drama film for Cillian Murphy, who plays Robert Oppenheimer, and best supporting role for Robert Downey Jr, who lends his features to a politician, the scientist’s great rival. Favorite with eight nominations, the film also won the prize for best soundtrack.

The success of the other favorite, Barbie, was more measured. Greta Gerwig’s feminist satire, which sees the peroxide doll discover the misogyny of the real world, logically won the new Golden Globe for best commercial success, following dominating the global box office last year.

Poor Creatures, the feature film by Yorgos Lanthimos, a fanciful variation on the theme of Frankenstein, beat him to the prize for best comedy. She previously won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy. The actress Emma Stone was preferred to the star of BarbieMargot Robbie.

American actor Paul Giamatti, for his part, won the award for best actor in a comedy, for his role in Winter Breaka Christmas story for adults.

Anatomy of a French success

Barbie was also beaten for the best screenplay prize by the French film Anatomy of a Fall, which doubled the stakes by winning the title of best foreign language film. Enough to confirm the universal appeal of the last Cannes Palme d’Or.

Emue, its director Justine Triet described her surprise at seeing her feature film, which recounts the trial of a writer accused of the murder of her husband and dissects the collapse of their much-loved relationship.

While writing with her partner Arthur Harari, “we kept telling ourselves that we were having a lot of fun, but that no one would go see this film,” she explained. According to her, the feature film “deals with the truth and the impossibility of pinning it down.”

This double success risks causing regrets in France, because Anatomy of a Fall will not be eligible for the Oscar for best international film. He was snubbed to represent France for the benefit of Passion of Dodin Bouffanta historical romance between two foodies.

On the television side, Succession dominated the evening, with the award for best drama series, as well as awards for Kieran Culkin (best actor in a drama series), Sarah Snook (best actress) and Matthew Macfadyen (best supporting role). The comedy The Bear also won honors with the award for best comedy series, as well as statuettes for its actors Jeremy Allen White (best actor) and Ayo Edebiri (best actress).

A new generation organization

The hype around the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, which filled theaters around the world this summer, was timely for the Golden Globes, recently bought and reformed by private investors. Long considered a springboard to the Oscars, Hollywood’s former favorite party, renowned for its relaxed atmosphere, has been undermined by corruption and racism scandals in recent years.

To get out of this bad situation, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which had created these awards and focused the accusations of ethical breaches and amateurism, was dissolved. The new organization has greatly diversified the jury, inviting critics from all over the world.

Reforms mischievously welcomed by Robert Downey Jr, once more. “To the Golden Globes journalists: thank you for changing the rules of your game, and therefore your name,” said the actor, rewarded for his supporting role in Oppenheimer.

The elite responded this year, far from boycotting the ceremony in 2022. Hollywood thus seems to indicate that it is ready to give in. In addition to cinema heavyweights like Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese (Killers of the Flower Moon), producer Oprah Winfrey and music stars Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa and Taylor Swift, also nominated, all walked the red carpet. Comedian Ricky Gervais, who had presented the ceremony in the past, however, was missing to receive his award for best stand-up show.
