Netanyahu’s Leadership Crisis: Division in Wartime Government and Public Dissatisfaction

Tel Aviv: After three months, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, who is unable to achieve any of the declared goals in the Gaza war, has become a headache and the division in the wartime government is intensifying. Three ministers of the National Unity Party boycotted the cabinet meeting held on Sunday.

Former Defense Minister Benny Gantz was boycotted. Although Benni’s National Unity Party is not part of Netanyahu’s coalition government, it is a member of the wartime government. A long-standing rift between IDF chief Herzi Halevi and far-right ministers has now come to a head. The investigation announced by Halevi into military and security failures in the October 7 Hamas attack angered ministers, including the far-right Minister of National Security Itamar Benguir.

However, Benny’s Unity Party has adopted a stance of defending Halevi. Far-right leaders strongly disagreed with many other positions of the wartime government. The extreme right-wing ministers in the government are demanding that the Palestinians be evicted from Gaza and Jewish immigration be facilitated. However, the President of Israel said the other day that this is not the position of his government or the people of Israel. Israel is confused by the strong opposition of the United States and other countries.

At the same time, a new survey report shows that most Israelis are dissatisfied with Netanyahu’s performance during the war. In a survey conducted by the Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation, 64 percent of respondents said that Netanyahu’s performance was not good. 46 percent said that Benny Gantz, leader of the National Unity Party, is the most qualified person to lead the government.

Only 25 percent favored Netanyahu. According to the survey, if the elections are held now, the National Unity Party will win 33 seats. Netanyahu’s Likud party has a chance of winning 20 seats.
