A 40-year-old Slovakian died on a ski tour on Sunday in an avalanche on the Mölltal Glacier in Carinthia (Spittal an der Drau district). According to police, his 33-year-old friend, also a Slovakian citizen, was injured to an unspecified degree. Both men were buried off-piste in the area of piste 5 at around 2,700 meters above sea level at midday while ascending with their touring skis.
The 33-year-old was only partially buried and, according to his own statements, was able to free himself following regarding an hour and walked back to the mountain station without any equipment. It was only from there that he was able to make an emergency call at 3:40 p.m. The 33-year-old man was injured to an unspecified degree and was flown by rescue helicopter to the Lienz district hospital.
The 40-year-old was located by the emergency services at a depth of around two meters using an avalanche transceiver (LVS) and rescued at around 5.10 p.m. Despite resuscitation measures being initiated immediately, the man died at the scene of the accident. Both winter athletes were equipped with an avalanche transceiver and an avalanche airbag backpack.
