Samsung accidentally published the product page of its upcoming SSD 990 Evo NVMe with marketing and hardware characteristics. While Samsung is mostly known for making top-end SSDs like the 990 Pro, the 990 Evo is a mid-range SSD with read and write speeds of just 5,000 MB/s and 4,200 MB/s respectively.
But the 990 Evo’s biggest advantage is its dual-lane PCIe 5.0 support, which allows it to retain normal bandwidth. The only limitation is that the data connector has two lanes, in which case the PCIe 4.0 SSD will only be able to use two lanes.
Perhaps these PCIe 5.0 lanes will be useful for some scenarios, but for consumer drives it is difficult to imagine how necessary they will be.
Additionally, the 990 Evo offers only a modest boost over its predecessor, the 970 Evo Plus, which was already a fairly fast SSD for its time and overcame the limitations of the PCIe 3.0 interface.
However, the 990 Evo NVMe SSD is a mid-range product and should be priced lower than the flagship 990 Pro. Unfortunately, as of today, Samsung has not yet provided pricing for its new drive, so we can only guess how much it will cost.
However, Samsung has continued to develop its Evo lineup since the 970 Evo Plus in 2019 and now supports PCIe 4.0 and PCIe 5.0 in the new 990 Evo NVMe model. It remains to be seen what Samsung will offer in the future.
