Raz Blanchard is preparing to become the global nerve center for tidal energy In the coming years. Two projects must, in fact, be deployed at the western tip of the Cotentin. With notable progress in recent months.

The most advanced is that of the consortium HydroQuest-Qair led by the Cherbourgeois CMN which has already obtained guarantees, both from theÉtat (1) and its turbine.

Like the duration of the two concessions for the Normandie Hydroliennes and Hydroquest-Qair projects at Raz Blanchard. Operation will therefore be possible until 2047.

The most powerful tidal turbine in the world

The other project, led by Normandy Hydrokineticsresulting from the collaboration between Efinor, Normandy Participations et Proteushas just crossed a new level with the validation of its AR500 tidal turbine.

We successfully completed Phase 1 of the Goto Islands pilot project and recovered the turbine in the Naru Strait last December. This phase concluded 12 months of production with an impressive 97% availability. Building on the success of the pilot project, the wind turbine is now ready to be upgraded locally and redeployed in the first quarter of 2025.

The Normandy Hydroliennes project has just passed the essential fire test of immersion and can therefore embark on the future exploitation of its four tidal turbines of 3 MW, the most powerful turbine in the world (2), for a nominal power of 12 MW, in Raz Blanchard.

“This pilot farm will produce 36 GWh per year of clean, sustainable and 100% predictable energy to the French national network and will supply 16,000 inhabitants from 2027,” predicts Normandie Hydroliennes.

After multiple procrastination, the France therefore seems (finally) ready to enter into a new environmental era.

(1): In July 2023, the State released 65 million euros to support HydroQuest-Qair’s FloWatt project.

(2): The FloWatt project tidal turbine built at CMN in Cherbourg will have a power of 2.5 MW.
