Ducatenzeiler, the controversial former leader who became a media personality

The guy watches TV shows to spread histrionics, tell lame paper stories and give his opinion on everything that can be discussed. He is one of those characters that give ratings and guarantee viralization on networks. The perfect guest. It doesn’t matter too much if what he says barely qualifies as plausible. He performs, and that is enough. This is how, by dint of charisma, witticisms and emphatically launched nonsense, Andrés Ducatenzeiler became the media revelation of recent times. Twenty years have passed since he resigned from the presidency of Independiente following a management that with good will might be described as controversial. And today, in front of a camera, he found the best version of himself.

The beginning of the end. Before, long before becoming the popular Duka or @presi.duka, Andrés tired the popular Independiente as a bar. In reality, he was a member of La Banda de los Narigones, which was an alternative group that had a good connection with Gallego, the legendary boss of the authentic bar. From that time on, young Andrés already exhibited some characteristics that today identify the media personality. “He took over stories that he had not experienced, stories that other boys shared, he later told them as his own and added a novelistic plus to them. That always characterized him,” comments journalist Damián Rojo, Ducatenzeiler’s former teammate in La Banda de los Narigones.

And there he was, from tribune to tribune, when the president of Rojo, Héctor Grondona, had the idea of presenting in Independiente a management project promoted by the former Minister of Public Works and Services, Roberto Dromi. It was the late 90s, the privatization decade. He was the trigger for Andrés to get involved in the club’s internal politics. There he started his political career. And the decline of Independiente.

Every time he talks regarding his management in Rojo, Duka repeats two slogans: he was the last champion president and the only one who in the last twenty years did not receive document letters nor was he involved in legal cases. An arbitrary synthesis, of course. “He is the Silvia Süller of football,” defines Damián Rojo. When he talks regarding others he tells the truth, but regarding his own management he tells what he wants.”

It is true that the last local tournament that Independiente won was in 2002, when Ducatenzeiler as Secretary General put together a great team with the external support of businessman Daniel Grinbank. They started the season at risk of relegation and ended up champion. That campaign brought Duka to the presidency: he swept the polls the day of the draw once morest Boca with a goal from Lucas Pusineri. On the following date, Rojo took the Olympic lap on the San Lorenzo field. With barely a week in the presidential chair, Duka raised a trophy.

What followed is what Ducatenzeiler usually avoids. In the following five tournaments Independiente finished 17th, 14th, 13th, 15th and 14th. There were 873 days of presidency, in which Rojo played 96 official matches, with 26 wins, 32 draws and 38 losses. What happened to Racing? The same: of five classics Independiente might only win one. Such nonsense is also reflected in the coaches. In three years seven paraded: José Omar Pastoriza, Oscar Ruggeri, Daniel Bertoni, Américo Gallego, Chiche Sosa, César Luis Menotti and Pedro Monzón.

None of that might end well: on April 15, 2005, when he still had eight months left in his management, Ducatenzeiler resigned and handed the club over to Julio Comparada, who in a different style collaborated with the club’s debacle.

Now, without being able to go to the field or participate visibly in the political life of the club, Duka found a place on YouTube to expose his verbiage. And without limits. Together with Flavio Azzaro, they are capable of making a broadcast of “The Crazy and the Sane” that lasts six hours, enough time for Ducatenzeiler to drop improbable bombs, denounce those who run the football business, get up to go to the bathroom, come back , victimizes himself, insults a journalist from a cable network, eats two empanadas, tells how he scammed the owner of a car dealership when he was president of Independiente, declares his love for a model and everything continues as if it had not happened here nothing.

The character is irresistible. The perfect guest at a barbecue with friends who want to laugh. As long as none of those friends are Independiente fans.
