COMPARATIVE Version 2021: A very nice surprise in our consumer test of the week on Bolognese sauces, even if nothing beats the mamma recipe
Appearance of the packaging: overall, it still looked very similar. We didn’t like the color of the Aldi label, even if the private label logo was successful. On the other hand, we really liked the pot offered by Delhaize, which looked very artisanal.
Appearance of the product: for Lidl, we liked the color of this well-bound sauce where the meat is clearly visible. On the other hand, the smell was very strong and a little unpleasant. On the Aldi side, it is mainly the smell of spices that is highlighted. On the Carrefour side, there were already more pieces of vegetables and meat and the smell was pleasant. It was similar for Colruyt and Intermarché. At Delhaize, it was much more subtle and linked like sauce. For the big brand, this lacked a piece of meat and/or vegetables. But the smell was very good.
Nutritional value: it was quite varied, for once. Nutri-Score B for Aldi, Intermarché and Colruyt, Nutri-Score C for Panzani, Carrefour and Lidl. Delhaize gets an A.
Readability of the label: for the major brand, it was illegible. For Carrefour, it was barely better. It was a little small, but already better at Delhaize. Lidl and Aldi made up for it with a painting, but it was also minimalist. It was very good for Colruyt and Intermarché.
Taste: we start with Lidl, which offers a sauce where the meat was too little present for our taste. Above all, it was quite sour and disgusting. It was already much “softer” at Aldi, and therefore more pleasant. The downside is that the taste of the spices took precedence over the rest. The bolo sauce from Carrefour was already closer to a homemade sauce. There was still a little sickening side. The advantage of Colruyt’s sauce is that it contains a lot of meat and tastes good. On the other hand, it’s more disgusting, you really have to love tomatoes. For Delhaize, the sauce tasted great like fresh tomato sauce and the meat melted in your mouth. For the big brand, it wasn’t bad. But we looked for the meat, and above all we were treated to a concentrate of spices which took precedence over everything else. Disappointing. Finally, Intermarché left too much room for spices, and not enough for the rest…
The big brand test: to start the year off right, here is the only king cake to choose from in mass distribution (COMPARATIVE)
Value for money: for a pot of around 400 g, the big brand is much more expensive (€5.49) than Aldi, which offers the cheapest pot at €0.99! For the rest, here in order: Lidl, (€1.09), Carrefour (€1.45), Colruyt (€1.52), Intermarché (€1.99) and Delhaize (€3.79) .
