“The prices are too low”: elected officials from the Alpes-Maritimes are stepping up to the plate in the face of the shortage of medicines

“Çcaused a reaction beyond what I thought. It’s very positive! The point is that the patient challenges the politician.” The problem is far from being resolved but Raphaël Gigliotti can at least rejoice on one point: the message has been heard.

In recent days, the Riviera pharmacists’ union, which he co-chairs, has distributed petitions in the 400 pharmacies in the Alpes-Maritimes. Objective: to press the government to act. The initiative provoked a reaction from patients, but also from elected officials on the Riviera.

This Friday morning, Senator (LR) Alexandra Borchio-Fontimp came “give support” to Richard Gigliotti and his colleagues, during a visit to the Antiboise Pharmacy.

The parliamentarian knows this subject “which has been going on for a long time”: she was vice-president of the commission of inquiry into the shortage of medicines and the choices of French industry.

His report, delivered last June, made seven recommendations. They are more relevant than ever.

“Price too low”

The key: “Review the price of the medicine, too lowconsiders Alexandra Bocrhio-Fontimp. We must agree, in France, to correct this competitiveness gap with our neighbors.”

Another senator LR makes the same observation. Dominique Estrosi-Sassone challenged the government in writing. “To some extent, these low prices contribute to this shortage. Laboratories prefer to supply their production to other countries where the drug is paid more expensively…”

The concrete effects? Riviera pharmacists describe them to their parliamentarians. “They are unable to deliver antibiotics or medications that people need for their treatments. And these are not comfort medications.”notes Dominique Estrosi-Sassone.

“In addition, they endure the disappointment or even the anger of certain patients,” adds Alexandra Borchio-Fontimp. Nice municipal councilor Hervé Caël, president of the Council of the Regional Order of Physicians, also gave his support to pharmacists.

Therefore, it is “time to act resolutely to restore and strengthen our pharmaceutical industry, a guarantee of regained health sovereignty.”

This is the message of a column published in The echoes by the Riviera MP Alexandra Martin, the mayor of Cannes David Lisnard and the economist Frédéric Bizard. The two LR elected officials call “our leaders have a necessary awareness”.

“European harmonization”

What if the European elections of June 9 were the opportunity? This is Alexandra Borchio-Fontimp’s wish. “It would be interesting if the European candidates made proposals, in the face of a global shortage.”

Dominique Estrosi-Sassone’s recommendation: “We must achieve European harmonization, to recreate the conditions for secure production and supply, with a guaranteed price over a certain number of years.”

But these solutions on a global scale appear distant and uncertain. In the meantime, the elected representatives of the Riviera invite us to put pressure on the laboratories, to take an interest in the outstanding stocks in our cupboards.

Pharmacists rely on the Vigirupture solution to find medications missing from other pharmacies. A stopgap far from “the overhaul of our health system” claimed in The echoes.
