Jamoigne Chiny Sports Complex: Flooding Issues and Renovation Challenges

A few years ago, renovation work was undertaken in the Jamoigne sports complex (Chiny) to avoid flooding. The problem: the improvements did not prevent certain damage.

In Chiny, the Semois no longer really looks like a river. However, the level has already dropped significantly compared to previous days. Wednesday evening, water seeped into the town’s sports center: “It reached more or less 30 centimeters and therefore, all the football locker rooms were filled with water. It’s a sight that we don’t see regularly, fortunately“, explains the manager.

If in the locker rooms it is already ancient history, further away, the water has risen even higher, in a place where it is not at all welcome: the engine room. The situation is all the more surprising given that anti-flood measures had been planned. “It causes damage. Under our hanging pool, we still have water. During the work in 2011, we created a waterproof tank to put our filtration pumps, but the water went over it.

The reason: the facilities were simply not designed for so much water. The problem is that the damage caused has direct consequences on the swimming pool. The water is no longer treated, “bacteria will grow, it might turn green“, and we can no longer swim there.

The 2011 renovations still made it possible to save a large part of the installations, notably the boilers, which were moved higher up. The entire work cost 11 million euros.
