On the 6th, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon visited the metropolitan bus stop at the entrance to Myeong-dong, where chaos occurred on the way home from work, and inspected the scene.
On this day, a video of Mayor Oh’s apology, looking around the scene while snow was falling, was posted on YouTube’s ‘Oh Se-hoon TV’. Mayor Oh said, “I am truly sorry. We should have done things more carefully, but we tried something new carelessly in the cold winter and I am sorry for causing inconvenience to many people.”
On the 27th of last month, the city of Seoul installed a facility displaying route numbers on the sidewalk of this bus stop, allowing passengers to line up only at the places that correspond to their bus numbers. However, it was pointed out that congestion has worsened since the signs were installed. This is because congestion has become extreme due to the ‘train phenomenon’ where buses are lined up one following another.

Regarding the reason for trying something new first, Mayor Oh said, “Recently, as the number of people commuting from Gyeonggi-do has increased, the bus route into Seoul has been selected as desired, so capacity has been exceeded.” He added, “There is a lot of traffic during rush hour (5 to 9 p.m. ) has become a very crowded place, with regarding 550 buses entering.” He continued, “The length of the stop is regarding 30 to 40 meters, and when a bus stopped in front of you, you had to run from behind, and when a bus came behind you, you had to run from the front.” He added, “There were several complaints that there might be safety issues such as collisions due to congestion.” He said.
What was introduced to improve this situation was to encourage buses to stop only in front of the waiting board with the route number on it and not to pick up any passengers anywhere else. Mayor Oh said, “However, since we only rode buses in designated lines, a ‘train phenomenon’ occurred where buses behind were pushed aside if the bus in front did not pull out.” He continued, “What would normally take 10 minutes took an hour, and people who would have waited 5 minutes to board the bus ended up waiting 30 minutes, which caused a lot of inconvenience,” and once once more, “I am truly sorry.”

As congestion worsened, the city of Seoul decided not to operate signs from the previous day until the 31st of this month. In addition, it was decided to deploy guidance personnel on site and change the routes and stopping locations of some metropolitan buses.
Mayor Oh said, “As we have experienced accidents big and small, the demand for safety is increasing and its importance is being emphasized a lot. We will receive opinions for regarding a month and improve it in a way that receives as many opinions as possible. “We will look forward to your many opinions,” he said.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government plans to collect opinions from citizens regarding the metropolitan bus stop at the entrance to Myeong-dong by the end of this month and prepare supplementary measures.
