Representatives from the Fenasbac Institute, a consultancy linked to the National Federation of Central Bank Employees’ Associations (Fenasbac), were in the city of Washington, in the United States, to participate in the United in Sustainability Summit, an annual summit of the credit union industry.
The event, co-organized by the United Nations Federal Credit Union (UNFCU – ONU) and the Federal Credit Union of Organization of American States (OAS – FCU), brings together leaders from the cooperative credit sector to discuss sustainability, diversity and corporate social responsibility.
The Fenasbac Institute shared results from Recip – Recognition of Innovation with Purpose, a Fenasbac initiative that has the institutional support of the Central Bank of Brazil and UNFCU-UN.
Paulo Aragão, President of the Management Board of Fenasbac, states that the organization’s commitment to the purpose “made us overcome borders and show the world the power of Brazilian cooperativism, recognizing initiatives that impact people and communities, being a great milestone for our journey ”.
According to the official website of the initiative, Recip aims to “map the innovation capacity of Brazilian cooperatives; establish references, in order to guide the management of cooperatives towards innovation; and contribute to the expansion of financial cooperatives in the National Financial System”.
Recip’s general coordinator, Carolina Castro, highlights that the initiative is aligned with the seven principles of cooperativism, the BC# Agenda and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The Recip delegation that participated in the United in Sustainability Summit was also attended by representatives from Sicredi Conexão (Angelita Marisa Cadoná), Sicoob Coopemata (César Augusto Mattos) and Viacredi (Vanildo Leoni), the three cooperatives recognized in the Innovation category with Global Purpose of Recip 2nd Cycle.
The theme of the event held in Washington this year was “Building Resilience Through Sustainable Action,” and leaders from the winning cooperatives at Recip were able to share their sustainable development initiatives with a global audience.
Furthermore, the Recip delegation visited the regulatory body for cooperatives in the United States, the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) and the National Press Club. The leaders of Brazilian cooperatives were able to learn regarding the work of these American institutions, exchange experiences and establish connections.
Castro sees the Fenasbac Institute’s participation in the event as evidence of the potential of Brazilian credit cooperatives to be partners in the implementation of international projects in Brazil.
“Credit cooperatives already work with risk, responsibility, focus on results and sustainability. Furthermore, they already work on site, so they know the local reality and deliver projects that promote transformation and socioeconomic impact”, she explains.
