The characteristic movement at the Truckers Field on Jordan Island announces the proximity of one of the most important sporting events in the region. The Río Negro International Regatta recovers its usual summer appearance and for a week it will transform the beaches, shores and spas of the region.
The passage of the Regatta throughout the province does nothing more than pay honor to a river that is synonymous with a source of life, human development and sporting containment, in this case canoeing. This competition that was born in 1965 and is in its 48th editionsaw from the inside over half a century, the technical evolution of the paddlers and the transfiguration of the boats that give color to the event.
Legend says that a paddler receives such status once he runs the Río Negro Regatta. This historic and emblematic test contains all types of objectives: there are those who face the challenge for the first time, where anxiety is what keeps them on alert; also for whom competition is the main mobilizing factor; There are those who use it as therapy or those who, just for the pleasure of being part of it, are already fully fulfilled.
This Friday the Camioneros property hosted once once more the first day of a new edition. The control of boats, under the supervision of two judges from the Argentine Canoe Federation, set the pace of the daywhere the teams little by little got into the weather.
The green grass of the property was covered with canoes, waiting to be inspected and for everything to be within the regulations. «In the K1 Olympic boat the important thing is the weight, which should not be less than 8 kilos. We have not had problems because the majority are above that weight. In the Olympic K2, the minimum weight is 12 kilos and in the cross country it is 25 kilos. In the 5.20 kayaks we have found several that are narrower than the regulation ones. You have to reach 52 centimeters. The ballast for each centimeter less is one kilo,” explains Hugo Cabrera, one of the judges of the test.
Today the Regatta will start at 2:30 p.m. on Jordan Island in Cipolletti and will end at Paso Córdoba de Roca, approximately two hours later for the first boats to reach the finish line. One hour before, there will be the opening ceremony with provincial and municipal authorities, who will welcome you to the test.
The Regatta will have seven stages and will end in Viedma on Saturday the 13th. At the moment the organization has not decided which of the partial stages will be a time trial, although it is likely that there will not be that modality in this 2024 edition. The rest day will be the fourth, then of the third stage between Luis Beltrán and Choele Choel.
