Tomorrow, the 7th (Sunday), a low pressure system with strong cold air in the sky will remain over the sea west of Hokkaido. Active snow clouds are forming around this low-pressure area, and there is a risk that they will continue to flow into Hokkaido. On the 7th, caution and vigilance are required due to localized heavy snow and flurries. Also, the day following tomorrow, the 8th (Monday: Coming of Age Day), there is a risk of heavy snow and drizzle over a wide area along the Sea of Japan.
A low pressure system with strong cold air below -40℃ remains stagnant.
At 9 o’clock on the 7th, a small low pressure system will be stationary over the sea west of Hokkaido. This low pressure system is accompanied by strong cold air at an altitude of 5,200 meters, with temperatures below -40°C, more than 5°C lower than normal, and the atmospheric conditions are unstable.
Furthermore, the northerly wind blowing north of the low pressure system and the westerly wind from the continent will collide, forming a line of active snow clouds that will be carried by the wind and flow into the vicinity of Hokkaido one following another.
The winds are converging, and active snow clouds are forming and flowing into Hokkaido one following another.
For now, there is a high possibility that active snow clouds will flow towards Shishi, but there is also a risk that some of them may also flow towards Ishikari and Sorachi. Heavy snow will continue to fall for a long period of time, and snow accumulation will increase quickly, resulting in locally heavy snowfall.
A line of active snow clouds will gradually move eastward from the followingnoon of the 7th. Therefore, in the followingnoon, there is a possibility that there will be a full-fledged flow into the Ishikari region, including Sapporo, and the Sorachi region.
The amount of snow that will fall on the 7th will reach 40 centimeters in some places. The wind will blow and the visibility will be quite poor, so please be careful when driving.
On the 8th, the atmospheric pressure will become winter-like, and the amount of snow is likely to increase.
This low pressure system will pass east of Hokkaido on the 8th, and the area around Hokkaido will experience a strong winter-like pressure pattern.
The pattern of snowfall will change from localized to widespread snowfall on the Sea of Japan side, and there is a risk that the amount of snow will increase further, and the area covered by heavy snow or flurries may expand.
In addition to paying attention to weather information that will be announced by meteorological observatories in the future, it is necessary to pay sufficient attention and vigilance to changes in the weather, especially how snow falls.
