the essentials A father, whose daughter suffers from two autoimmune diseases, raises a cry of alarm. In the grip of violent discomfort, her daughter had to wait more than 4 hours for SMUR to intervene at her home.
Jean-Claude David, his wife and their daughter will remember their Christmas 2023. The day following the festive meals, on December 26 in Ségoufielle at noon, the three members of the family felt bad. “It all starts from food poisoning. All three of us were a little sick,” says the father. Except that his daughter, aged 18, suffers from two autoimmune diseases (Editor’s note: An autoimmune disease is characterized by a dysfunction of the body’s immune system, leading to the body attacking its own tissues. ).
“For us, it was still okay. But for her, it got worse. I think illnesses played a role. She found herself feeling unwell, she lost her vision, she was paralyzed, her heart rose to 160 beats, she lost consciousness,” lists the father of the family.
Impossible to transport
Panicked, the parents called the firefighters who redirected them to Smur 32. The regulating doctor asked the usual questions. But does not seem able to send a crew. “I understand, we’re not going to send a vehicle for nothing. But there comes a time, when something like this is reported, with your daughter causing discomfort following discomfort, it’s not normal.”
An ambulance is called, it arrives. There, the team takes care of the patient but cannot transport her, her condition does not allow it, says the father. “The paramedic kept calling Smur to say that there was a real emergency. She explained that the little one was very weak, that they had to act quickly. And there, it was no longer just a distraught parent, but a professional,” says Jean-Claude David.
“After two hours, the paramedics were switched to Smur 31 and they were the ones who intervened 45 minutes later. So they arrived a little following 4 p.m., for a first call at noon.”
“We must alert local elected officials”
“If the Smur is already on an intervention, they cannot move to another, that’s obvious. It’s the same everywhere in France, there are large guard sectors and few resources, that’s how it is. Our mission is to find solutions to stabilize the person, then to give our assessment to the regulating doctor. It is then up to him to judge the situation and send the person to the appropriate hospital. If transport is not possible, if the presence of a doctor is required and he is already in intervention, you have to wait,” indicates an ambulance company manager. As was the case on December 26 in Ségoufielle.
The young girl was hospitalized in Purpan, and was released the next day. “Food poisoning, probably accentuated by his autoimmune diseases, the doctor told us,” says Jean-Claude David. “I am elected from my municipality, but above all a parent. It shocks me to see our villages, health in rural areas left in such a state. Can we, today, alert local elected officials and public authorities regarding the situation of emergency services? », asks the father following this mishap.
“The problem is that this already happened, under identical conditions, three years ago. I had been a little virulent, it was a parent speaking. But I see that the situation has not improved, on the contrary. We must say it, denounce it, because it concerns everyone. Should we wait for a new tragedy to occur before taking action? », breathes Jean-Claude David once more.
