Flavored Vaping Products Circumventing the Law – The Impact on Canadian Regulations and Public Health

Flavored vaping products have disappeared from shelves since October 31. In fact, they should have disappeared, but this is not the case everywhere since businesses manage to circumvent the law.

TVA Nouvelles had the experience of going to a store to get a flavored vape. Nothing complicated once inside.

The seller explains that there are several flavors of mainly fruit, and the choice finally falls on a “tropical” flavor.

After opening the package, the person who carried out the experiment inhaled the vapor and confirmed that “it tastes quite like fruit”.

We therefore see that the sale of this type of flavored product continues illegally. However, it is clearly marked “tobacco” on the packaging and on the vape, but a tobacco flavor for Quebec, enough to fool the authorities.

“It is all of the Canadian regulations that are at stake. We have other provinces that have put forward regulations that are similar. We see how far the industry is willing to go to outwit and circumvent regulations. This should be a signal to Minister Holland, federal health minister,” explained the spokesperson for the Quebec Coalition on Tobacco Control, Flory Doucas.

The other phenomenon observed is the addition of small flavored bottles without nicotine in specialized stores: flavor enhancers. In other words, the flavor that goes into the vape, but sold separately.

“My fear is not regarding the people who buy these flavors in stores. My fear is more that we are sending a message to young people that we can flavor liquids,” added the spokesperson for the Coalition for the Rights of Vapers of Quebec, Valérie Gallant.

“I don’t trust these shots. Maybe there is some diacetin once it’s heated? I’m not getting into that. There are some who even ask me if they can add maple syrup,” explained the owner of the Vapo Délice boutique in Trois-Rivières, Robert Belleville.

He sees several shortcomings in the law imposed in October and wonders why the government did not see this coming?

“They failed royally because if they had looked at their own text of the law, they would have seen that we were heading towards that,” he lamented.

The Trois-Rivières police remind you that it is prohibited to sell flavored vaping products, especially by providing falsified labeling. Traders face fines.
