Austria’s World Cup biathletes did not show any improvement in form at the beginning of the new year in Oberhof. In the sprint competitions on Friday, Simon Eder in 22nd and Anna Gandler in 30th were the best of the red-white-red team with one and two shooting errors respectively. David Komatz also made it into at least the pursuit races on Saturday in 32nd place and Anna Juppe and Lisa Hauser in 53rd and 60th respectively. Benedikt Doll and Justine Braisaz-Bouchet won.
The German Doll picked up where he left off before Christmas with the sprint victory in Lenzerheide. However, the fourth men’s success for Germany this winter was only secured by 1.8 seconds; the attack by Sturla Holm Laegreid, who like Doll had a shooting error, was not quite enough. Third and fourth places went to his Norwegian compatriots Endre Strömsheim (+5.4/1) and Johannes Thingnes Bö (+19.6/2). Bö was once once more very strong on the cross-country ski trail in difficult conditions, but made one mistake too many.
The Frenchwoman Braisaz-Bouchet celebrated her fourth victory in a row following her Lenzerheide triple, and like Bö, she is also ahead in the overall World Cup. She performed outstandingly on the cross-country ski trail and was able to make two shooting errors. The flawless Franziska Preuß was 4.4 seconds behind, the German was almost half a minute ahead of Braisaz-Bouchet following the second shooting. A further 0.2 seconds behind Preuß, another Frenchwoman, Sophie Chauveau, came third (1).
Gandler and Hauser had stayed in the front field without making any mistakes following the prone stage, but missed two and four times while standing. Hauser, who wasn’t there before Christmas due to illness, was lucky enough to have the chance to do better on Saturday (2:40 p.m.; men: 12:25 p.m.). The Carinthian Dunja Zdouc, who competed for the first time this World Cup season, only finished in 82nd place two days following her 30th birthday. Eder (+1:25.7), on the other hand, impressed in the shooting, only the last attempt was unsuccessful. Felix Leitner is further out of the role (77./3:21.5/3).
