  • Schalke 04 would like to strengthen themselves in the transfer winter. A “better maker” might come, but the S04 would move away from its previous strategy.

Gelsenkirchen – FC Schalke 04 has not yet presented any new signings in the winter transfer window. It currently doesn’t look like the S04 will introduce a new player at their training camp in Portugal until January 10th.

Schalke 04 is thinking regarding the “Moritz Jenz” model in the transfer winter

In any case, it is unclear how much money sports director Andre Hechelmann actually has at his disposal. In the meantime, there was even talk of a requirement from Schalke bosses for new winter signings: players must first leave the S04 before new professionals can be signed.

Now Niklas Tauer has left the S04, but the Royal Blues are only saving on the salary of the midfielder who was previously on loan from FSV Mainz 05. A new loan deal would be possible.

Already in November, RUHR24 reported that Schalke sports director André Hechelmann might change the transfer strategy. Now he confirmed once more to the WAZthat borrowing would be possible without a purchase option. The “Moritz Jenz” model is conceivable.

Schalke 04 signed a “better maker” in January 2023

The 1.90 meter tall defender immediately stabilized the S04 defense following his loan signing in January 2023. The Royal Blues failed to concede a goal in the defender’s first four games. The now former Schalke sports director Peter Knäbel once described Moritz Jenz as a “better maker”.

If the Royal Blues now find a similar “improvement maker”, a loan would be conceivable even without a purchase option. “I wouldn’t push the topic aside,” Andre Hechelmann told the WAZ.

The “Knappen” did not establish a purchase option for Moritz Jenz, but negotiated an obligation to purchase with FC Lorient. At the time, a permanent commitment was linked to staying in the Bundesliga, but the S04 did not achieve this. The defender had to return to France and was signed by VfL Wolfsburg in the summer of 2023 for around eight million euros.

Schalke sports director Andre Hechelmann is holding transfer talks

FC Schalke 04 primarily wants to strengthen itself in two positions in the transfer winter: on the right side of defense and in attack. In conversation with the WAZ Andre Hechelmann confirmed that he had already had some concrete discussions.

According to a club statement, coach Karel Geraerts emphasized: “We will see what happens by the end of the transfer period. It has to be right – sportingly and financially.” He wants fresh impulses and new energy in the team. There will likely be further S04 transfer news in the coming days.
