« From this version, the WordPad and People applications will no longer be present following a clean installation of the operating system. Subsequently, WordPad will be removed with an update. It cannot be reinstalled. WordPad is now considered an obsolete Windows feature “. This is what we can read from a blog post published by Microsoft on January 3 during the deployment of theInsider Preview Build 26020, on the canal Canary of Windows 11. It mightn’t be clearer, this announcement plants a final nail in the coffin of WordPad.

Emblematic, because it has been present on Windows for decades, but Microsoft’s word processing application had already been abandoned on the software level since the start of the 2023 school year. Microsoft announced in September its desire to no longer update the utility… foreshadowing in factits disposal. Four months later, here we are.

Irrevocable endgame for WordPad

As Microsoft explains, WordPad will initially be absent from Windows during a new installation of the OS. Subsequently, it will be completely deleted from the system and can no longer be manually reinstalled by users. Clearly, WordPad will disappear completely and permanently within a few months.

The news is, ultimately, not so sad. The application no longer benefited from any special attention from Microsoft, and had not received new features in ages. She thus suffered greatly from the comparison in the face of “Pages », its equivalent on macOS… which Apple embellishes and improves with almost each new version of its OS.

Note, however, that if WordPad disappears, this will not happen for Notepad. The latter will not be impacted by the deployment of future versions of Windows and will therefore remain in place. That said, if you want to equip yourself with an enhanced version of this tool, keep in mind that there is Notepad++, a free application accessible at this address.
