PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) — South African athlete Oscar Pistorius has been paroled from prison and is at home, South Africa’s Department of Prisons said Friday.
Authorities did not provide further details regarding Pistorius’ release. The announcement came around 8:30 a.m., indicating that prison officials released the famous Olympic and Paralympic runner, who has both legs amputated, early from the Atteridgeville Correctional Center in the South African capital, Pretoria.
Pistorius has served almost nine of the 13 years and five months he received for murdering his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, on Valentine’s Day 2013. His parole was approved in November.
In South Africa, those convicted of serious crimes are eligible for parole following serving at least half of their sentence.
