The analyst Ming-Chi Kuo The year has already started bringing a series of predictions regarding the cameras of the next iPhones.
According to him, the “iPhone 17” (expected for 2025) will feature a front-facing camera 24 megapixels and with a six element lens, which will provide a significant improvement in image quality and in capturing light and details. Currently, the iPhone 15 has a 12MP front sensor and five elements, which should also be used in the “iPhone 16”.
The main responsible for supplying the front cameras of iPhones is, according to Kuo, the Genius. Compared to a five-element lens, a six-element lens costs 100% to 120% more, which is expected to contribute to revenue of more than 3 billion Taiwan dollars for the supplier next year.
Kuo also commented on improvements to the cameras of the “iPhone 16 Pro”, Apple’s next top-of-the-line model. He said Genius is making progress on manufacturing a periscope lens for the smaller model in Apple’s most advanced lineup, with mass production expected to begin late in the second quarter of this year or early in the third, which also should contribute to the manufacturer’s revenue.
Even though the main supplier, in this case, is Largan, and there has been a 10% to 15% decrease in the price of the component, the high price of the periscope lens should strengthen Genius’ revenue. Furthermore, the analyst predicted that exchange demand for “iPhones 16 Pro” will increase sales of the models by 5-10% compared to iPhones 15 Pro, due to the speculated larger screens.
What’s new in the ultra-wide lens
Another upgrade point in the “iPhones 16 Pro” should be the ultra-wide-angle camera, which also has Genius as one of the main suppliers. Kuo corroborated the rumor that the sensor will now have 48MPadding that it would also have pixels of 0.7 micrometers and a size of 1/2.6 inch, once morest the 12MP, 1.0µm and 1/3.6″ of the iPhone 15 Pro.
Even with the upgrade, the final size of the images produced by the camera would remain at 12MP, like the main sensor, although with significantly better quality; It is possible that the ultra-wide-angle camera will also be able to capture photos in ProRAW mode.
Because the lens continues to be six-element, its price increase should not be that large, according to Kuo. With the increase in production utilization, however, the supplier’s profits should also continue to rise.
Genius is also the exclusive supplier, as said by Kuo, of the lenses used in the Apple Vision Pro. Mass production of the component would have started at the end of 2023 and is estimated to contribute approximately 1 billion Taiwan dollars to the manufacturer’s profit this year, more than with other suppliers.
