Supply chain reports indicate that Apple will continue to increase its use of TSMC’s 3nm wafers through 2024, with the launch of the M3 Ultra expected to occur in a Mac Studio around WWDC 2024 — but perhaps without an update in between. MacPro.

The change to the 3 nm process, practically controlled by TSMC, occurred with the M3 and A17 Pro chips in 2023. According to the portal The Elec and a report from ICsmart, TSMC customers, including Apple, will increase orders for second-class wafers generation of this process, reaching up to 80% utilization by the end of 2024.

Apple plans to release new chips using this process later in 2024, like the M3 Ultra and A18 Pro.

The M3 Ultra is expected to launch alongside a Mac Studio update mid-year. However, the rumor does not specifically mention the use of this chipset in a possible Mac Pro, generating uncertainty as to whether this was an accidental omission or something intentional.

Apple surprised the world by introducing three M-series processors at once, ahead of the expected schedule, during its “Scary Fast” event. The M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max chips were revealed in late October 2023. More Macs are likely to launch with these processors before the M3 Ultra’s announcement, which, according to previous Apple standards, will likely be during the WWDC in June.
