Children and adolescents are usually witnesses and also direct victims of gender violence committed once morest their mother or a woman in their family environment.
Fights, screams, threats and blows are generally part of the previous scenario of femicides, the bloodiest expression of sexist violence, which most frequently occurs within couples. But these children also often witness the worst scenario: the death of their mothers or grandmothers.
The last femicide of 2023, which happened in Salsipoders, shocked due to its characteristics: Carmen Andrea Aguirre’s two daughters, aged 9 and 14, witnessed how their father, Matías Agarone, murdered their mother. They were the ones who asked the neighbors for help. An indelible scene for the community.
For its part, the crime of November 21 in Córdoba capital had as its victim a teenager, Milagros Geraldine Reyes, who was 16 years old, who was allegedly murdered by her former stepfather, Leandro Dante Romero, who abused her and then murdered her. Geraldine’s one-year-old son was found at the crime scene in a state of shock.
In Villa del Rosario, one of the three children of Jésica Gómez (27) encountered the terrible scene on May 4. Her mother and her partner, Ramón Villafañe, dead. The man would have committed suicide following the crime. Villafañe was the father of two of Gómez’s children.
In Oncativo, a granddaughter of Felisa Paulina de lo Santo (72) and Mario Raúl Picca (74) was the one who discovered that they were both dead following looking through the handle of the door of the house. In this case, although there are no testimonies that speak of previous gender violence, it is believed that the man might have killed the woman, who was suffering from a serious illness, and then took her own life.
In the femicide of Amalia García, which occurred on October 29 in Villa Dolores, it was her youngest daughter who found her body and then notified her father. García’s current partner, Elvio Zárate (58), is detained for the crime.
On October 7, in Río Tercero, Silvia Fria died from her husband’s attacks in her home. The youngest of the couple’s four children was there.
In total, in six of the 15 femicides in 2015, children or grandchildren of the victims had direct participation in the crime scene, indelible images that will require prolonged therapeutic support. Furthermore, in other cases, even if they have not witnessed the crime, there are children who suffer a very big shock in their lives: they lose their mothers and in many cases also their fathers when they are the femicides: they are sentenced to life imprisonment, or in other cases, they commit suicide.
For all these reasons, gender violence is considered a social problem whose main victim is women but also children and their entire environment.
