An expansion of the conflict must urgently be prevented
Vienna (OTS/SK) – “The escalations of the last few days show that there is an urgent need for a ceasefire in the Middle East conflict!” says SPÖ spokeswoman for foreign policy, Petra Bayr, with conviction. The conflict has so far caused over 20,000 civilian deaths in Israel and mostly in the Gaza Strip. The risk of a wildfire is also increasing. The killing of a Hamas leader in Lebanon led to an intensification of fighting between Hezbollah militia and Israel. Fighting between militias is also increasing once more in Iraq. ****
“Since the Hamas terrorist attack on October 7th, international voices have been warning of a destabilization of the Middle East. This must not happen. In order to defuse the tense situation, there must finally be a humanitarian ceasefire and Hamas must release the remaining hostages in its captivity, as UN High Commissioner Volker Türk is also demanding. The civilian population of Israel, the Gaza Strip and all other affected countries would suffer enormously if the conflict expanded. This would only worsen the European security situation,” said the MP.
Bayr also refers to a statement by the leader of the Israeli social democratic party Avoda, Merav Michaeli, that only two sides have an interest in continuing this conflict, namely Hamas and Benjamin Netanyahu. “The Netanyahu government is trying to prolong its survival by continuing the conflict. Hamas, meanwhile, is strengthened by every IDF attack, as frightening polls in the Palestinian territories have shown in recent months. Without negotiated solutions, only the most extreme Palestinian parties will be strengthened, while the Palestinian Authority continues to work with Israel to prevent further deaths in Israel, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.” (Conclusion) sd/lp
